Heated stones are cheaper than unheated stones and the heat treatment is permanent so it never comes out. Buying a heated stone will allow you to purchase either a better quality stone or a larger size than if you would purchase an unheated stone.
There will be much more variety available for you to choose from as oppose to having to settle for whatever is available, as is often the case in unheated stones, because there simply aren't many stones available in the market to meet your exact requirements. This is a very big problem in unheated rubies and in larger size unheated sapphires. Remember very high percentage of the rubies and sapphires in the jewelry market today are heat treated. Within the jewelry trade if any client asks for a ruby or sapphire without specifically mentioning unheated, it is assumed the client is looking for heated stone.
Unheated rubies and sapphires tend to be poorly cut as compared to heated ones. The reason is because cutters are more inclined to save as much carat weight as possible from the rough in the case of unheated stones as oppose to heated stones. |
