Color
Intense Green - This is the highest color grading for our emeralds. Color of these emeralds is as deep of a green an emerald can get without turning opaque or being overly colored. Brilliance of these emeralds is also excellent.
Vivid Green - Color of these emeralds is a shade less of a green than intense. Such emeralds have extremely rich green vivid color and are highly sought after.
Deep Green - Such emeralds are overly green (which is preferred by many people). Such stones generally don't have as much brilliance as the intense green stones, due to the depth of saturation of color, but are preferred by a lot of conusmers because they are significantly less in price than an intense green emerald.
Such emeralds are still quite rare and in demand.
Medium Green - Such emeralds are very pleasant to the eyes as they are not too dark or too light and have very good brilliance to them. These emeralds generally have 50 to 70% color saturation.
Soft Green - Such emeralds are lighter in color than medium green emeralds and generally have color saturation of 20-40%. These emeralds have very good to excellent brilliance.
FL- This is the highest clarity grade a emerald can have. This means the gemstone is 100% clean to the eye to a trained, experienced gemologist but not necessarily under 10X or higher magnification.
VVS1, VVS2- This grading means the emerald would be 100% eye clean to an untrained eye but a gemologist might be able to observe very, very tiny inclusions from certain side angles.
VS1, VS2- This means very tiny inclusions would be visible under very close inspection to an untrained eye.
SI1, SI2- Slight visible inclusions upon inspection would be visible to an untrained eye but inclusions are not affecting the brilliance or the color in the emeralds.
I1- These emeralds are highly included where the inclusions hinder the brilliance and color of the emerald.
Is the longer of the sides in a gemstone. However, for round and square shape (also princess cuts) the length and the width will be the same.
In order to determine which length and width measurement s are required, please print out our stone size chart. This chart compares actual sizes of gemstones in various different measurements. Once the measurement values that are required is determined, please input these values in the measurement length and width combo box to see only those gemstones which meet the search requirements.
Enhancements
GemsNY has the largest* online inventory of emeralds whether oiled or unoiled.
No Enhancements (None)- Emeralds which have no enhancements have only traditional process of cutting and polishing applied to them in order to improve the appearance or durability of the gem. Such emeralds are extremely rare and on average are about 300% to 500% more expensive than oiled emeralds.
Cedar Oil - Among emeralds it is a general practice among the manufacturers to oil the emeralds to enhance the color of the gem. This treatment has been there in the industry for long time and is accepted worldwide. In fact, this treatment is so common that in the trade if an individual asks for an emerald it is understood they want oiled emerald. Probably over 99% of all emeralds used in today's jewelry are oiled.
Carat Weight
Carat weight is the unit of measurement that is used by the jewelry industry to weigh gemstones. 1 carat is equal to .2grams or there are 5 carats in 1 gram.
We suggest when looking for gemstones it is better to search by measurements rather than carat weight. This is more important as visually how large a gemstone appears is more important than how much it weighs. Click here for our stone size chart. Click here for our stone size chart.
