5 Ways you can lose Jewelry while trying to sell it

All right, so let me paint the picture for you. You have got your stuff correctly appraised without any glitches. Now you go to jewelers to sell it, as I suggested in the previous post on Best Places to Sell your Jewelry. Now, this is the time when most people become careless and take things easy. The dishonest jeweler is like a wolf – he realizes it, and pounces on the opportunity before you knew what hit you. Now, I give you ways in which clients generally lose jewelry – take note and find measures to guard against them.

  1. The jeweler says he wants to pull the diamond out and get a better look of it, before he makes an offer. Crook alert! He is most probably trying to pull a switcheroo. Keep your jewelry in front of you.
  2. The jeweler says that you have been tricked, that the diamond is not worth half as much, and that he can sell it for you at a reasonable rate. You don’t need to believe him if you have done your groundwork well. Even if you haven’t, the best thing to do is to move along.
  3. He gives in written that you have given him the diamond and tells you to come back later for the money. When you come back, he says he couldn’t sell it and gives you back the diamond, only that this time he replaces it with a fake. Even if you find out about it instantly, he will say that that’s the one you gave him. You can do nothing. So here is the thing, he gets to keep the diamond only if he gives the money.
  4. The jeweler keeps your diamond on consignment and loses the merchandise. Now you are in a soup, and even though it’s his mistake, there is no way you will get the amount that the diamond would have fetched. In such a case, one should be prepared to get nothing.
  5. The final one – the jeweler tells you to leave your stuff on consignment, saying it will fetch you more money that way. And a few days later – surprise! He goes outta business. So moral of the story, no one gets to keep your diamonds unless he pays for it to the last penny.
