Top 4 Dirty Tricks to ROB You in Diamond Business
So here is the situation - you go to the diamond appraiser to get your diamonds valued, and while doing so, avoid all the kinds of wrong diamond people I mentioned in my blog post Find the Right Diamond Appraiser. Now what remain to be guarded against are the worst kind - the dirty diamond tricksters. These diamond guys will literally try to rob you of your possessions. Again, no one can be trained to successfully ward of an attempt of such nature - robbing and protection against it are both works of art. But I’ll give you the most commonly witnessed ways of robbing, and the rules to be followed to guard yourself against them.
The most common punchlines are:
‘Leave your diamonds and jewelry and come back later’ - so you can come back later and collect the fake ones. It doesn’t get much worse than this.
‘I will have to pop the diamonds and gemstones from the setting’ - the only reason he might wanna do that is to make the switch for a fake.
‘Gotta clean it - this thing is not clear enough’ - again, he will wanna go to the back room - and you know what he’s gonna do there.
‘Please wait in the waiting room while I take a look at these diamonds.’
Just one rule - no matter how reliable you might take the person to be, never lose sight of your diamonds and jewelry. He needs to respect your demands if he wants to run his business.
Then, there are the types who are dumb or deliberately play dumb. These people will try to tell the diamond color grade or the weight of the diamond without using the proper equipments - to whatever category they belong, they are no use for you. Take your diamonds and move along.
There are also the lazy kind, who talk vaguely of diamond clarity and stuff. You need to get the diamond imperfections drawn - that’s what you are paying him for. And if he doesn’t do that, to hell with him!
So here is the thing - you get him to answer all your questions because that’s what you are paying him for; you are not being unreasonable. The Rap value, the diamond imperfection diagram - no matter what you ask him, his job is to give it to you. He has no reason to get heated up.
Finally, the most outrageous of all tricks - the diamond appraiser says you have been robbed, that the diamond piece is worthless, and that he can still get it sold for a reasonable price. Chances are that he is the one robbing you. Get rid of him.
