What to expect from a Diamond Appraiser?

posted in Diamond | Related Posts: , , , , , |

So we were looking for the honest independent diamond appraiser, and after avoiding all the pitfalls I mentioned in my post Top 4 Dirty Tricks to Rob you in Diamond Business, we ended up with the right diamond guy. Meet Joe the honest appraiser, who has a proper certification from GIA, who charges a flat rate (normally between $25 and $50 per piece, perhaps with a discount for more than one pieces), and most of all, who does not seem to have any link-ups with buyers/sellers in diamond business. He does not try any of the Dirty Tricks and agrees to all your demands. Now, what exactly are the demands or in other words what should we expect from a diamond appraisal?

Here they are:

  • The weight and purity of gold are to be given in proper units (grams and karats).
  • The wholesale or Rap value of every piece (diamond or colored stone) is to be given.
  • The approximate weights of the diamonds or colored stones are to be given in carats.
  • The color and clarity grades for the diamonds are to be given as per the proper GIA standards.
  • You might also wanna get a word on the quality of colored stone, that is, if it is industrial, commercial or investment quality.
  • You will definitely want to get the imperfections in each diamond plotted.
  • And yes, if a piece of jewelry is not over $250, you don’t want it appraised - otherwise you will be spending more than you will make on it.

So you have all the information you need, plus a few clarifications if you find them necessary. Now, equipped with this information, we try to make as much money as we can. Do not forget that you are a one-timer and need, not a very good bargain, but a reasonably good one which can give you the liquid cash that you need. :)

I don’t mean to be too in your face, but I’m not sure I agree with this. Anyhow, thanks for sharing and I think I’ll come to this blog more often….
