A spectacular diamond necklace worth about $12.5 million is to be auctioned at the grand Christie's Hong Kong’s Magnificent Jewels sale on May 28. The diamond pendant necklace features a marquise-cut purplish pink diamond suspending a 75.36-carat, D, internally flawless, type IIa briolette diamond.

This is a part of a range of stunning jewels that are highly anticipated in the show. About 250 jewels engraved with fine precious gems and intricately carved designs are for sale. Another gorgeous ornament that is being highlighted is an emerald and diamond necklace by Boucheron, circa 1950s, carrying eight emeralds, old European and cushion-cut diamonds, and baguette-cut diamonds. Also, a diamond and ruby ring by James W. Currens with a natural 8.88-carat center oval ruby, pear and marquise-cut diamonds, is a leading jewel on sale.

Reportedly, the Hong Kong auction will also feature jadeite and diamond jewelry, and pearl jewelry.

The ring believed to be carved in 1965 features a cushion-shaped diamond set horizontally within a mount of brilliant-cut diamonds and baguette-cut diamonds.

Blue diamonds are structurally very pure and account for less than 1% of all diamonds mined. Specifically, a deep blue diamond is considered extremely rare. The ten minute auction attracted about 20 buyers on the phone. The ring fetched 6.2million pounds much higher than its estimate of 1.5 million pounds.

Originating from the famous ancient diamond mines of Golconda in the Southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, the Princie Diamond was sold at the Christie’s New York Spring Magnificent Jewels sale for a record price of $39.3 million. At more than $1.1 million per carat the precious stone is a highly valuable gem coming from this region.

The stunning fancy intense pink cushion-cut diamond was once owned by the Royal family of Hyderabad, rulers of one of the wealthiest provinces of the Mughal Empire. The diamond was purchased by the London branch of Van Cleef & Arpels for £46,000 when it was first auctioned in 1960. Considered the most chemically pure and possessing rare optical transparency, this Type IIa diamond was christened the “Princie” in honor of the 14-year-old Prince of Baroda, who attended Van Cleef & Arpels’ party at its Paris store with his mother Maharani Sita in 1960.

According to the auction house besides the Christie’s sale of the legendary collection of Elizabeth Taylor, this was the most successful jewelry auction ever held in the United States.

Empress Joséphine to whom the ring was gifted was a 32 year widow with a son and daughter at the time of their marriage on March 9, 1796. Empress Joséphine did not produce an heir and Napoleon chose to divorce Joséphine so he could remarry for an heir. In March 1810, he married Marie Louise, Archduchess of Austria with whom he had one child Napoleon Francis Joseph Charles. He became Napoleon II in 1814 and reigned for only two weeks before he died of tuberculosis in 1832 at the age of 21, with no children.
