Largest Flawless Blue Diamond Auctioned For Record Price

At the recent Christie's Geneva auction an extremely rare pear-shaped blue diamond was sold for $23.8 million record price. The stunningly flawless 13.22 carat gem is reportedly the largest vivid blue diamond in the world.

According to the auction house, in the past decade, only three blue diamonds of 10 carats or more with the same vivid grading for intensity have been sold at auction, all weighing less than 12 carats and none flawless. Reportedly mined in South Africa, 'The Blue' as it is called also set a world auction record of $2 million per carat for a blue diamond.

Further, seven records were set at the Geneva auction including the highest amount ever paid for a yellow diamond - $16.3 million for the 100.09-carat Graff Vivid Yellow diamond ring.

Other gemstones jewelry which was sold much higher than the estimates included a 1912 Cartier diamond brooch for $17.5 million, 660 percent more than when it was first sold at Christie's in Geneva in 1991, and a pear-shaped and D-color flawless 75.97-carat diamond sold for almost $14.5 million.

Sotheby's this Spring auction sold a world record $141.5 million in jewelry.
